I've been remiss in the past in failing to point out a resource for great information. It isn't that I'm trying to keep it a secret - it is more like how a fish in water never realizes he or she is in the water, that's just how things are. In this case, I've been faithfully listening to a podcast every Thursday for several months, but I haven't commented on it. I suppose part of it is that I'm not a bit podcast listener, so this has seemed more like just my little private activity (everyone avert their eyes!). Anyway, I'll keep it a non-secret secret no longer. Every Thursday, I download the new episode of "The KunstlerCast". In its own words, "The KunstlerCast is a weekly audio program about the tragic comedy of suburban sprawl. Each episode features James Howard Kunstler, the author of "The Geography of Nowhere", "The Long Emergency" and other books, speaking to Duncan Crary, the host/producer, about the failure of suburbia and the inevitable end of this living arrangement with no future. Some folks have a tough time with Kunstler's message, which can be bleak. Or with his tone, which can be acidic and biting. I don't share either of these reservations. Kunstler can be uproariously funny, in print or in person, and if his message veers toward darkness, it is a message we need to hear. I urge you to give it a listen. |
