Get Your Knickers in a Knot, or Why
Hanes is a Sucky Company
Bill Gresham

Normally, when I go to the trouble of writing a note like this, I make it a true essay, and count the words, and labor over it a bit, because I'm aiming to get it published. Since I know this won't be published, it is going to be a bit extemporaneous (as extemporaneous as a typed message can be).

I usually try to support companies which have good reputations, ethically, environmentally, etc. Sometimes, though, I'm not perfect in this regard. For example, my provider of underwear. For quite a while, I've favored Hanes. I've come to appreciate a number of their products, especially their Beefy-T, which I have in a number of colors, blank, and use as undershirts. To me, the Beefy-T can't be beat(en) in this regard. So I've looked the other way when it comes to Hanesbrands reputation as a company with bad labor practices. Hanes violates the worker rights in a number of areas in their Domincan Republic factory ( http://www.workersrights.org/Freports/TOSDominicana.asp ). Yes, I'm a hypocrite!

It is very easy to be a hypocrite sometimes. You just continue to do what you've always done, because it is much simpler than changing your habits.

I'm hereby changing my habits in this regard.

In the past, I've placed a couple of decent-sized orders with Hanes online. By doing this, I've received discounted shipping. In the past, Hanes has followed through on their end of the bargain. However, about a month ago, I placed an order with Hanes online, which has resulted in.... almost nothing. I received an acknowledgement of the order. Then I've heard nothing else. Every so often, I've checked on my order status. It has indicated that the order is "in process". For nearly a month. This must be a really complicated order, what with the... underwear I ordered. Mustn't expect too much of a corporate retailer these days, I suppose. Maybe all the executives are off on some team-building junket at a high-end resort, and the workers, perhaps forced by habit to work 60-hour weeks, are stuck in some sort of automatic pilot zombification. I don't know.

But I do know that Hanesbrands Inc.'s atrocious customer service prompted me to look into the reputation of the company. And I don't like what I found.

So I won't be ordering from Hanes again. You're on notice, Hanes (cue the sound of a quaking corporate giant).
